A technical rider is the document that lists everything a performer or production needs to deliver their show: audio system and mixing consoles, lighting, video, staging dimensions, power requirements, backline instruments, crew and schedule. It travels as an annex to the performance contract, and venues and producers ask for it because it converts vague expectations into a checkable specification, so every technical gap is found and solved before show day instead of during it.
If you produce events, sooner or later a rider will land on your desk, from a band, a DJ, a keynote speaker or a corporate show designer. Knowing how to read one, and how to write one, is a basic production skill. This guide covers what a rider contains, who is responsible for what, and the mistakes that turn a routine document into a show-day crisis.
Why the rider exists at all
Live production has a structural problem: the people who need the equipment (the artist’s team) and the people who provide it (the venue and the producer) usually meet for the first time hours before the show. Without a written specification, everyone assumes, and assumptions in technical production are expensive.
The rider solves this by forcing precision early. When a producer receives it weeks in advance, they can:
- Compare it against what the venue already has installed
- Quote and rent whatever is missing
- Negotiate substitutions when the exact requested model is not available locally
- Schedule load-in, soundcheck and rehearsal times realistically
- Budget the technical production accurately instead of discovering costs late
That last point matters more than most planners realize. Rider compliance is often one of the largest technical line items in an event budget, and one of the least visible in early estimates. What a technical rider includes
Riders vary in depth from two pages for a solo speaker to dozens for a touring headliner, but they cover a consistent set of sections:
Audio
The PA system requirements (coverage, power for the room size), front of house and monitor consoles (often specific models), microphones and DIs with quantities, monitor wedges or in-ear systems, and the input list: every channel the show sends to the console, numbered and labeled.
Lighting
Fixture types and counts, control console, rigging positions, haze machines, and for larger shows a full lighting plot: a scaled drawing showing where every fixture hangs.
Video
Screens or LED walls with dimensions and pixel pitch, projectors and lumens, playback systems, camera feeds and signal formats. For corporate events this section is often larger than audio.
Stage and rigging
Stage dimensions, height, ramps, risers, load capacity, rigging points and weight limits. This is where venue reality most often collides with rider ambition.
Power
Total consumption, number and type of circuits, distribution, grounding, and whether generators or UPS backup are required. Undersized power is one of the classic invisible failures of live events.
Backline
The instruments and amplifiers provided locally rather than carried by the artist: drum kits, guitar amps, keyboards, with specific makes and models.
Crew and schedule
How many local stagehands, riggers and technicians the production must supply, plus the timeline: load-in, setup, soundcheck, doors, show, load-out.

The most important row is the second one. The producer is the translator between what the rider asks and what the market can deliver, and the one accountable if the gap is discovered too late.
How to read a rider without getting burned
Producers who handle riders regularly develop a checklist mentality. These are the habits that prevent surprises:
- Read it the day it arrives, not the week of the show. Long lead items (specific consoles, LED walls, rigging) can take weeks to source in some markets.
- Check the revision date. Riders get updated; confirm you are working from the current version, not the one from a tour two years ago.
- Never assume silence means flexibility. If a requested item is unavailable, propose a written substitution and get written approval from the artist’s technical contact.
- Cross-check power against the venue. The rider states consumption; someone must verify the venue can actually deliver it, with margin.
- Verify rigging with the venue’s structural data, not with optimism.
- Put rider compliance in supplier contracts. The audio company should be contractually bound to the rider spec, not to a summary of it.
- Walk the compliance on-site. Before the artist’s crew arrives, the production team verifies every item physically. Finding a gap at that point is uncomfortable; finding it at soundcheck is a crisis.
Riders in international productions
When an event brings international talent to a market the agency does not know, the rider becomes a translation exercise in the literal and practical sense: equipment brands common in the US or Europe may be scarce locally, voltage and connector standards differ, and local crews work under different labor rules and schedules.
This is where a local production partner earns their fee: they know which suppliers stock which consoles, what a realistic substitution is, and how to get the artist’s technical director to approve it in advance.
